GTA 6 takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar's satirical version of Florida, with Vice City (its stand-in for Miami) as the main city. Rockstar has confirmed six regions so far: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
The real-world comparisons below are interpretations by the press and by us, based on how the regions look in the trailers and how Rockstar describes them. Rockstar never says "this is that place": Leonida is a caricature of Florida, not a copy.
Under the official images of Vice City, the Keys and Grassrivers we have added a real photo of the Florida place it resembles, so you can compare. Those photos are not from Rockstar or the game.
The six regions of Leonida
| Region | Official tagline | What it's like | Real-life counterpart (unofficial) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vice City | "Everything in Excess" | The big city: beaches, high-rises, nightlife | Miami |
| Leonida Keys | "Gateway to Paradise" | Island chain and marinas where Jason lives | Florida Keys |
| Grassrivers | "Welcome to the Wetlands" | Swamps, gators and airboats | The Everglades |
| Port Gellhorn | "Live Hard" | Coastal town with a rough reputation | Florida Panhandle (Panama City area) |
| Ambrosia | "Keeping Leonida Sweet" | Farmland and sugar industry | Agricultural South Florida near Lake Okeechobee |
| Mount Kalaga | "Wild, Wild Country" | Forests, hills and backcountry | North Florida and South Georgia |
Vice City

The heart of the game. Rockstar pitches Leonida as "the darkest side of the sunniest place in America", and Vice City is its center. The August 2026 Extended Look showed car chases through the streets, rooftop bars, underground clubs and the beachfront. For anyone who played GTA Vice City back in 2002, this is a return to that city, set in the present day.
Leonida Keys

A string of islands linked by roads and bridges, with marinas, boats and waterfront bars. According to his official bio, this is where Jason lives, in a place owned by Brian Heder, doing jobs for local dealers.
Grassrivers

Leonida's swampland. The tagline and the trailer footage, with alligators and shallow water, make the Everglades comparison an easy one. Gator hunting was mentioned among the side activities in the Extended Look.
Port Gellhorn

A coastal town whose tagline promises a hard-living vibe. The press compares it to the Panama City area in northwest Florida.
Ambrosia

Rural Leonida, with plantations and a sugar industry; hence the pun in the tagline. It echoes the farming interior of South Florida.
Mount Kalaga

A national park with forest, elevation and dirt trails. Florida is famously flat, so this region seems to borrow more from the north of the state and southern Georgia.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar hasn't published an official size. Some Extended Look coverage says the map is roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, but frames it as a report rather than a Rockstar figure. We're treating it as a rumor.
What we're leaving out
A map from an old development build leaked in August 2026. We don't use it: it may not match the final game, and we don't publish leaks. After launch, we'll put together a region-by-region guide.
